Biophotons, the light emanating from our cells..

Just as the sun stimulates all life with light, every cell in our body emits up to 100.000 light impulses per second. These light impulses or photons are called biophotons and are emitted by all living organisms. They have a wavelength of  200 - 800 nanometer and are too faint to be seen by the naked eye.

Science:

First discovered in 1922 by a Russian embryologist Alexander Gurwitsch, biophotons have a long history in scientific research. With the invention of new measuring equipment, scientific evidence for their existence came finally in 1974.

Fritz-Albert Popp, a German biophysicist who has proven their existence is now one of  the main researchers of biophotons. He also discovered their origin from the DNA and their coherence.

Meridian System:

In 1996, he founded the International Institute of Biophysics in Germany. This institute is a worldwide network of biologist, chemists, medical researchers, physicists and other scientists, studying all aspects of biophotons at 14 universities and governmental research institutes.

One of the most groundbreaking studies on biophotons published in 2005 by Popp and his colleagues, confirmed for the first time the existence of the meridian system described by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). After moxibustion or similar light stimulation of the body in the 3-5 micrometer range, light channels of biophotons appeared on the body, at the places where meridians run according to TCM.

This physical evidence of the meridian system or 'qi', the vital energy that flows through it, went largely unnoticed in the medical community. And biophotons and their existence seem still relatively unknown.

At the same time the link between biophotons and the meridian system is very fascinating and increasingly, cell-biologists, neuroscientists and medical researchers are joining physicists in biophoton research.

The future:

There is so much interesting research being done on biophotons, acupuncture points and the meridian system and much can be found in data banks of scientific articles. If you have any difficulty finding information about this, you can always send me an email and I will be happy to send you some links.

The discovery of biophotons in the scientific world seems to have a sure impact on the way western society will view more alternative medicine in the future, such as somatic therapies, homeopathy and acupuncture. For example: The 'qi energy' flowing through the meridian system according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, may be related to node lines of the organisms biophoton field. The 'prana' of Indian Yoga physiology, may be a similar regulating energy force that has a basis in weak coherent electromagnetic biofields.
